Praying Like Jabez
written by Richard Thomas / February 04, 2006

Several years ago the brief story of Jabez found in 1 Chronicles 4:9&10 turned into a masterpiece of visual mental imagery. Two short verses from scripture squeezed of its contents produced a concentrated mixture of encouragement and motivation to unlock the treasures of Heaven.

It is God the Father's delight to bless His children. In the beginning God created a perfect environment for His children in which to dwell. The literal meaning of Eden is "a delightful place". A delightful place conjures up different visual images in the human mind just as mental imagery of heaven painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

But Heaven and Eden are two different realms. One physical while the other is spiritual. Adam was given the key of authority to rule the physical realm on Earth. Adam was to pass along the key of authority to future generations as a birthright. "...fill the Earth and subdue it; and rule over...every living thing..." [Genesis 1:28]. But Adam sold his birthright as do all for a taste of forbidden fruit. Eve was deceived but Adam was not. Adam tried to scale the wall of disobedience into heaven instead of gaining entry through the door of obedience.

From the fall of Man in the "delightful place" to Gethsemane, the marquee of human history displays briefly, creatures that delighted the Creator. Enoch pleased God the Father and the door of Heaven opened for him. Noah found favor in the eyes of God and spawned a new world for Abraham to obey God, becoming the father of many nations.

Jabez stands out among his brethren as an oasis in the desert of spiritual dehydration among Abraham’s descendants. 1 Chronicles 4:9&10 tells us that Jabez was more honorable than his brethren. Jabez descended from the Judah clan. Judah along with his brothers sold Joseph their brother into slavery. The recorder of Israelite history makes a point that I think many overlook. While the nation of Israel was crying out to the gods of Canaan, Jabez stands alone as a man rejecting the golden calf to reach upward with a heart devoted to the God of Israel, our only hope. Isaiah records the heart of God reaching out to a disobedient people saying "look to Me and be saved" [Isaiah 45:22].

Apostasy became the national religion of Israel in the land of promise. Therefore, the prayer of Jabez stands out in sharp contrast, not by accident, to the petitions made by Israel to the gods of gold, silver, stone and wood. Images reflecting spirit of the maker.

"For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the Earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is loyal to Him..."[2 Chronicles 16:9a] God is not a gene in a lamp. "His word is a lamp to guide our feet..."[Psalm 119:105a] He is our reward!

The prayer of Jabez is not about what we can get from God. But rather the result of a life who's eye is focused on his/her treasure in Heaven. "Seek first, the kingdom of God..." [Matthew 6:33] If you lose yourself for the sake of the kingdom of God, you are a winner [Matthew 16:26]. However, if you win the world you will lose what you thought to gain [1 John 2:15-17]

454247: The Papa Prayer: The Prayer You"ve Never Prayed The Papa Prayer: The Prayer You've Never Prayed
By Dr. Larry Crabb / Thomas Nelson

Like millions of Christians, Dr. Larry Crabb has always considered his prayer life a weakness: dull, crisis-driven and mostly lifeless. But something new happened when he began practicing the four steps of what he calls the PAPA prayer - a relational, conversational approach to talking with and enjoying God. Each step of this revolutionary method promotes the thought that "prayer is getting more of God rather than getting more from God." As Crabb shares his own journey and education in the mysteries of prayer, you'll see yourself and God in a very different light, altering the way you talk and listen to Him. A "Practical Helps" section at the end will help you put the book's principles into practice.

"The movement .. from 'I should pray' to 'I want to pray' is the revolutionary result of fidelity to The PAPA Prayer."
--Brennan Manning, author of The Ragamuffin Gospel
