written by Richard Thomas November 21,2001 What is doubt? According to my compact dictionary, doubts arise out of a lack of confidence or the absence of certainty. Doubt can be a good or bad thing depending on its application. Doubt can serve us well. For instance, if the stability of a building is in question, it will be condemned for safety sake. If an airline pilot doubts the travel worthiness of the airplane, the flight will be delayed for the safety of its passengers and crew. Doubt can be an element of good judgement. Or it can prevent us from reaching the goal of higher service for God. We are admonished from scripture to press forward and not look back. [ Luke 9:62 ] Many a pilgram in progress has slowed the ascent by looking back in doubt once the hand was placed on the plow. Doubt causes us to not only look back but to draw back from serving God. Basically it comes down to a choice of trust or mistrust. During episodes in the life of Christ the disciples chose to trust with worldly eyes rather than of faith. [ Matthew 14:23 -31 ] Doubt is the opposite of faith. And God has no pleasure in the faithless. [ Hebrews 11:6 ] Doubt is the eliminator of our upmost for the glory of God. Why do we doubt? What we are not sure of is what we are sure to doubt about. Doubts arise from the heart.[ Luke 24:38 ] And the heart of humanity is what God is seeking. The heart refers to the mainspring of everything we humans do. The will to be and do. Just as a metronome with a warped mainspring will not keep good time. So the heart of mankind is warped and out of tune with all of creation. Adam was not created with the defect. He was created innocent with the unique capacity to make moral decisions. Just like Lucifer before iniquity was found in him. When the "son of the morning" in his insane bid to de-throne God, was cast down to Earth, he wandered into the garden to take up a conversation with Adam's wife. Notice he did not challenge Adam directly. In the garden of God, Satan infected the parents of the human race with a disease causing them to doubt what God told them to not touch. But God so love us that He reconciled our hearts to Himself through the death of His Son, so that all who are clothed with the Lord Jesus Christ will be in perfect harmony. It is during the roll call of the sons of God when all of creation will harmonize with its Creator.[ Romans 8:18 - 22 ] "Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe, sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow." [traditional hymn ] Why should we doubt? The child of God has not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit of the living God. [1 Corinthians 2:12 ] There is no cause for doubting for God's children. If there are doubts in your heart, it is doubtful that you have seen Jesus. [ John 3:3 ] Or the fixation of your eyes have been temporarily focused on something or someone else momentarily. [Hebrews 12:2 ] The moment you see Jesus, you can never be the same. How do we see Jesus? Through the eyes of faith. Blind Bartemeaus could see Jesus long before Jesus restored his sight. [ Mark 10:46 - 52 ] The word of God was entrusted to faithful followers of Jesus Christ to compile and deliver the volume I hope you are using to reference all the scripture verses sighted in this book. It is the gift of the printed word of God that is intended to admonish the believer and abolish doubt. [ 1 John 5:12 - 13 ] While our first obligation to God is our relationship. Our contending for the faith should be the fruit of that relationship. Our intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father should set off an alarm when Satan whispers in our ear to discourage us and cause doubts to arise. Ever have doubts about your security in Christ? Guess where those toughts comes from? If you think Satan does not have access to your brain, you are sadly mistaken. Guess the origin of the voice that causes you to look back once you put your hand to the plow? That is why we must captivate evey thought to the obedience of Christ. When we do, there will be no doubt.[ 2 Corinthians 10:5 ]
