Written by Richard Thomas/ October 03, 2001 [ Romans 8:31-39 ] O, the agony of defeat. Would it be better to never try and not fail? To never face a challenge is to never have been born. Until the sun no longer shines, life is sure to hand humanity its share of woe. Current events are everyday examples of the misery that is sure to follow birth. The book of Job dramatically illustrates the point that "...man is born for trouble..."[ Job 5:7 ] Perhaps that is why the book of Job is situated midway through the Bible. Life may have you sandwiched between a rock and hard place, leaving you feeling defeated. There is no strength left in you to pick up and carry on. Never forget. His strength is made perfect through our weakness.[ 2 Corinthians 12:9 ] In other words. If you want successful results with God, you must first, remove yourself from the equation. Demanding your right to yourself is the root of sin and broad gate of defeat. The Devil is the prince of defeat. His goal is to devour all who put their trust in human strength. Humans are powerless in and of themselves to conquer Satan's world. To attempt to free yourself from Satan's grip is a lie of the Devil. The Cross of Christ is the Devil's doom. It is at the Cross where we must die to our human dignity and self rule where the chains of bondage to the god of this world fall off. Once we are marked as God's sheep, we place our ownership under the control of the Good Shepherd and Savior of our soul - Jesus Christ. It is only submitting to the authority of Jesus Christ will we have authority over Satan and his minnions. And the time has come for Christians to stop letting Satan push us around. I fear that America will be defeated by its own prosperity. Prosperity breeds self-indulgence. I am overwhelmed by the availabilty of food and non-food items in American grocery stores. I've worked in the grocery industry for over 30 years. One day a customer asked me if we (our grocery store) sold all the merchandise she saw on the shelves. Yes, everyday, thousands of items are made available by just one grocery store. Multiply that by the number of like retail outlets making the same items available for the general public, 24/7. The prophets God sent to turn Israel from the road of ruin were ignored, beaten, stoned and sawed in half.[Hebrews 11:32 -40 ] Their only task was to bring focus upon the God that delivered them from the grip of Pharaoh and bondage in Egypt. As long as they sought the LORD, He caused them to prosper. The moment they turned to follow the god of self- indulgence. Defeat was sure to follow. Maybe not immediately. For God’s forbearance has a long fuse. For during periods of prosperity is where humanity tends to forget God. Perhaps you are one of the prophets of today trying to persuade the general populace to focus on something more lasting than the passing pleasures of this world. Jesus promised His disciples they would have trouble in this world. And at the same time Jesus encouraged them to take refuge in Him.[John 16:33 ] Each disciple's life ended in death preceeded by pain. {The apostle Peter was crucified upside down because he thought himself unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. Tradition tells us that the apostle John ( the beloved ) was boiled in oil before he died.} At first glance, the casual reader of the Bible may view scriptures theme as adversity. If you are that reader, you are not far from the truth. For the battle began with the expulsion of self from paradise and will end when self is crucified. The whole point of the Bible is to direct our focus toward God. And Jesus Christ is, the physical manifestation of the invisible God. He is the God who touched our infirmities with His agony on the cross.[ Hebrews 2:14 -15 ] What looked like sure defeat to those that followed Him for three years, turned into triumph for all that were burdened and heavy laden.[Matthew 11:28 -30; 28:6,9; 1 Peter 1:18 - 19; Titus 3:4 - 6 ] The cross is the symbol of defeat to the world, flesh and the devil. To those that still have the vail pulled over their eyes by Satan, the cross and the grave is the end. To all that have been born again by the Word of God and regenerated by the Spirit of God can see the kingdom of Heaven.[ John 3:5-7; 1 Peter 1:23 ] Perhaps you have arrived here seeking consolation over feeling defeated. Your best foot forward is a little bloodied. There were great plans made that turned to ashes and sand. The lies of your horoscope promised a very bright future. Your fortune cookies say you have what it takes to succeed in life. Everything you have tried has met a roadblock. Success is just around the corner. There's a jackpot in the next lottery ticket, disregarding the fact that you have never won anything in ten thousand tries. God's promise to Abraham rings true to all that call upon the name of the LORD. "He is our shield and great reward." [ Genesis 15:1] They that take refuge in Him will not be disappointed (defeated). [Psalm 22:5; 34:22; Isaiah 40:31 ] If you are seeking hope for a new life, it all begins with Jesus. Begin Here! Top Christian Music Video
