Comfort When Bereaved

Wintercreeks.net Statement of Faith, Hope and Love

Welcome all visitors. Like a tree planted by the Spring of Living Water. The plan of action for Wintercreeks.net is to be a source of healing for the nations. The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of mankind, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the joy of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light in a dark world, nourishment for your soul, and comfort for a broken heart. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened and the gates of hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good the design and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, reverantly and prayerfully. It involves the highest responsibilty, will reward the greatest labor and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.

Comfort When Bereaved
Although this article may appear closer to the top of the alphabetical order, it is actually the last to be written in my first series of writings. Reason being the delicate nature of the subject. For who isn’t affected by death. How can anyone offer comfort in times of bereavement? As it is appointed for all of Adam’s race to return to the dust, we are, eventually, destined to be the subject of bereavement ourselves. Some will survive the battles of three wars while others become the notches on the gun. Many will perish in plane crashes, auto pile-ups, train wrecks, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. etc. As the rest gaze at the monitors, wondering; why and how they survived or missed it?[ Hebrews 9:27 - 28 ]

While it may seem unfair for some, not having a say regarding our entry into this world, it also may seem unfair when and how a person leaves it. We cannot always choose our exit. In the twinkling of an eye our body can become irretrievably separated from our spirit. When a person departs from this life at an age beyond the maximum average. We say, he/she lived a full life. But that is not to say we don’t feel bereaved. It’s when a loved one, whether family or friend, is snatched away from us by death unexpectedly or at an age we think is unfair - we feel cheated. Bereaved!

I lost my father to cancer before he reached his 54th birthday. I felt like many things were left undone. I never got to find out what he thought of me as a man. But I did get to talk to him the week before he died. I asked him if he would let me pray for him. He nodded in the affirmative. So I poured my heart out for him before the throne of grace. After I closed with amen, I got real close to his face and told him (in a whispered voice) “ Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart, all you have to do is let Him in”.

I was not raised in a Christian home, nor was God edified by my family. Christmas was celebrated as a day to count how many presents were under the tree instead of giving thanks for God’s eternal gift. [John 3:16, Romans 6:23 ] I have dedicated the past 30+ years to serving God by bringing the message of reconciliation into the labor force and being an example to my family and hopefully my community. I have been a laborer for nearly 33 years. And only eternity and fire will reveal the finished work He has given me to do, built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ.[ 1 Corinthians 3:7-15 ]

I have been to the funerals of friends and family. Heard the comforting words of the clergy. I am not a clergyman nor a theologian. But one thing I do know - we are not our own. Our children are not our own. Our families are not our own. We belong to God and the life given to us is borrowed. As J.R.R.Tolkien so aptly put it in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ - “all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us”. The Bible tells us that when our spirit departs, it goes back to God who gave it. [ Ecclesiastes 12:7 ] What will our epitaph read before a Holy God.

Only by faith in Jesus Christ can members of Adam’s race overcome death and stand before God justified. Only by faith in Jesus Christ have we passed from death to life. When we are clothed in Jesus Christ as a covering, the Bible tells us that death is swallowed up in victory.[ 1 Corinthians 15:54 - 57 ]

“...He was wounded for our transgressions...
He was bruised for our iniquities...
Surely He bore our sorrows...” [ Isaiah 53:1-12 ]

If you are seeking hope for a new life, it all begins with Jesus Christ.
