Accuracy and Reliability of Scripture

The definition of the word scripture in the Greek is graphe pronounced graf-ay from which we get the word graphic. Scripture simply means sacred writing. In Biblical times, a person that wrote things down was called a scribe. This individual had the gift and task of not only to writing things down but also to ensure that what was written was past along to future generations. The task of transferring the Old Testament writings from generation to generation became a noble trade. Everything was hand copied and accuracy was not an option. The word scripture was attributed to Old Testament writings but not applied until the New Testament era with the exception of only once in the Old Testament which is found in the book of Daniel 10:21. In particular, what this writer is referring to as scripture is the Holy Bible or God’s Word.

So what makes the Bible God’s word? Inspiration and the verifiable content are what make the Bible God’s word. Combined with the ability to speak to a person’s heart and bring about a transformation of the same on its own. The Bible is basically the history of humanity and the effort of an omnipotent God reaching out to re-establish the lost connection. When reading the Bible always keep in mind the triangle of past, present and future. In other words;
(1)“What did I learn from the mistakes of the past?”
(2)“Apply what I’ve learned from the past to the present.”
(3)“Remember not to duplicate past mistakes in the future?”

The word Bible means collection of writings that can be applied to many subjects. There are “Fisherman’s Bibles, Hunter’s Bibles”. Pick a subject, there is bound to be a combined volume of information that are guides on a particular subject. The 39 books that make up the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament are simply a collection of writings written over a period of 1400-1800 years by more than 40 separate writers in the languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. The apostle Peter writes in his second epistle chapter 1 verse 21 that “holy men as they were moved by the Holy Spirit spoke (and wrote) from God”. The prophets of the Old Testament were the verbal expressers of the invisible Word of God. Almighty God’s messages were meant to give direction to a misguided race. continue->

By John MacArthur / Thomas Nelson

Right now, Truth is under attack, and much is at stake. In a postmodern culture, Christians are caught in the crossfire of alternative Christian histories, emerging faulty texts, and a cultural push to eliminate absolute Truth altogether. As a result, many churches and Christians have been deceived. Worse still, they propagate the deception that poses itself as Truth! In The Truth War, John MacArthur reclaims the unwavering certainty of God's Truth and anchors Christians in the eternal, immovable promises found in His Word.
